Venezuela Food

Although our food selections here in Cocos Islands are already varied -- we have restaurants that cater to both Malay inspired and western meals -- it would still be a pleasure to visit Venezuela just to fill a hungry tummy. Venezuela food items represent a heterodox cuisine formed over the centuries, following European, indigenous and African customs.

Trying out Venezuela food is tasting three distinct cuisines in one go. Arepas, a dish composed of thick corn tortillas split and stuffed with fillings, is a reminiscent of Spanish quesadilla but with other influences. Hallacas is another interesting Venezuela food. While it is traditionally served by the locals only during Christmas, the dish is a fine representation of Venezuela's culinary prowess and thus, a must-try when you get there. Hallacas is Venezuela's homegrown version of the tamale, for your information.

Popular street foods to try (for the plain reason that we do not have any kind of street food in Cocos Islands) include Cachapas (corn pancakes topped with "telita", a type of salty cheese), empanadas (pastries with meaty fillings) and "perros calientes" (hot dogs).

And also, Venezuela is a leading producer of fine cacao beans. Venezuelan chocolate is, for the lack of better words, excellent.
